What Is Winterization in CBD Extraction?

Close-up of golden CBD oil with text overlay: What Is Winterization in CBD Extraction?

At Tayco Farms, we care about how your CBD is made — not just where it comes from. While many companies use chemical solvents to extract hemp compounds, we take a cleaner route: solventless extraction. That means no harsh chemicals, no unnecessary cleanup steps, and no compromise on purity.

One of those “cleanup” steps we skip? Winterization.

If you’ve ever seen the term and wondered what it means — or why some brands do it and others don’t — here’s a breakdown of what winterization is, how it fits into the CBD industry, and why it’s not necessary for solventless rosin extracts like ours.

What Is Winterization?

Winterization is a post-processing method used to refine hemp extracts that were made using solvents like ethanol or butane. These methods are efficient at pulling out cannabinoids like CBD, but they also extract unwanted compounds such as:

  • Fats

  • Waxes

  • Chlorophyll

  • Plant lipids

These extra materials can give the final product a murky look, harsh taste, or unstable consistency. So winterization is used to remove them — making the oil cleaner, lighter, and more consumer-friendly.

How Winterization Works

Here’s a simplified overview of how the process unfolds:

  1. Crude hemp extract is mixed with ethanol, which thins the oil and helps separate the compounds.

  2. The mixture is then chilled to sub-zero temperatures, usually between -20°C and -80°C.

  3. At these cold temps, the fats and waxes solidify and can be filtered out.

  4. Finally, the ethanol is evaporated, leaving behind a purified oil that’s ready for further processing or formulation.

Why Do Some CBD Products Need Winterization?

Solvent-based extractions — such as ethanol or hydrocarbon methods — pull in everything, not just the cannabinoids and terpenes you want. They’re efficient, but they also bring along the compounds you don’t want in your final product.

Winterization is necessary in those cases to:

  • Improve visual clarity

  • Remove plant waxes that can clog vape hardware

  • Increase cannabinoid concentration

  • Enhance shelf life and consistency

That said, not all extraction methods need this step.

Solventless Methods Don’t Require Winterization

At Tayco Farms, we use solventless rosin pressing and ice-water separation — two clean, mechanical techniques that don’t involve chemicals or harsh solvents.

These methods naturally avoid the problem winterization is meant to fix. Why? Because they only extract what we want — cannabinoids and terpenes — without pulling fats, waxes, or chlorophyll.

That means:

  • No post-processing needed

  • No risk of residual solvents

  • No flavor loss or terpene degradation from added refinement

We keep things simple, because clean starts should lead to clean finishes.

Common Extraction Methods and Winterization Needs

Here’s how common hemp extraction methods compare:

  • Ethanol Extraction: Requires winterization. High-yield, but pulls fats and chlorophyll.

  • Hydrocarbon (BHO): Requires winterization and heavy purging. Effective, but volatile.

  • CO₂ Extraction: Sometimes requires winterization. Cleaner than ethanol but still pulls waxes.

  • Rosin Pressing: Does not require winterization. Pure, solventless, preserves terpenes.

  • Ice-Water Hash: Does not require winterization. Gentle and solventless, often used to create rosin.

Only solvent-based extractions require winterization. Solventless methods don’t — and that’s why we use them.

How to Tell If Your CBD Was Winterized

You won’t always find “winterized” or “unwinterized” on a label, but you can spot signs of it:

  • Cloudy, murky oil may be poorly winterized or unrefined.

  • Bright, golden oil with good clarity often indicates refinement — or that it was solventless to begin with.

  • Lab-tested for solvents? Always check the COA. If a company uses ethanol or hydrocarbons, they should show results proving those solvents were fully removed.

At Tayco Farms, our solventless methods mean there’s nothing to remove — and our third-party lab results reflect that.

Final Thoughts

Winterization plays a key role in cleaning up extracts made with ethanol, but it’s unnecessary for truly clean extraction methods.

That’s why Tayco Farms skips the solvents — and skips winterization altogether. Our process:

  • Protects terpene integrity

  • Preserves raw cannabinoids

  • Avoids over-processing

  • Results in full-spectrum products you can trust

Solventless isn’t just a trend. It’s the next evolution of clean, effective hemp extraction.
